The Codex is the guiding sentience of the library, the great cataloguer who maintains and controls all that is the library. They appear in the main rotunda just inside the library as a tall marble obelisk inscribed with strange silver and gold runes that shift and change position constantly.  Smaller versions of this obelisk appear all throughout the library and visitors may speak to the codex at any point. It will not tell people directly where the knowledge they seek is located but it is known to drop hints and at least tell people which direction they need to start going in from the rotunda.
