+|Smithing is an art that allows one to imbue new properties into metals by introducing new elements to them.  But a properly trained Smith can take this one step further.  Whether or not they themselves are mages, any properly skilled metalworker eventually learns the secret of how to imbue metal with the properties of the elements, to change their inherent abilities without causing them harm, and can even make a basic weapon stronger.  Learning these talents on their own, or under the tutelage or a proper Smith, is considered a sign that an apprentice has finally mastered the basics of their craft, and is truly ready to step out into the world to become their own craftsman.
