We hear of these legends every day like the time the dragons flew over Ivalice, Saint Yuna and her pilgrimage, and perhaps even tales of the lost Lunarian home. These legends inspire us to go on to achieve great things. Sometimes these legends guide us to finding great and powerful lost treasures or locations. There are also legends about the spirits.
Atomos is one of those spirits that legends about it. Atomos is the greater spirit of greed and gluttony. Its hunger is so great it would consume the world if it were not bound. Sealed by the spirits within the Keep, a location unknown in the spirit realm, where he slumbers. Only the most apathetic of summoners would try to free him. For doing do assures one’s own death and possible that of the world itself. Many legends about how this spirit has woken in times of upheaval and consumed entire cities in its wake. Legends to remember what this spirit is and to fear it. One legend in particular though is best forgotten about this Great Spirit.
The legend of the artifact of Atomos is one that has been lost, but has been found. In the ancient days the artifact was used as a weapon of mass destruction. Coveted by generals and empires seeking to conquer. The mere threat of using the artifact would have cities surrender and armies lay down their weapons. Assassination, theft, betrayal were the means this artifact passed hands, and it passed hands many times. The destruction got so devastating Atomos started waking up on his own to consume. The spirits grew weary of constantly having to rebind Atomos to its prison that they took action. Agents were sent into the world, through summoner, esper and priest alike, to capture the artifact. By their hands the artifact was found, captured, and destroyed, or so it would seem.
In the matter of months, perhaps years the artifact of Atomos appeared back into the world. The spirits were appalled and concerned. Again, the agents of the spirits were sent out to protect the world. Again the artifact was captured and destroyed, and again it reappeared back in the world a short time later. The spirits ordered the artifact instead to be hidden within the spirit realms. Many locations were selected to hide the artifact. Each location the artifact would always disappear and reappear back into the world. No answer was ever found as to why this happened, perhaps Atomos will while he slumbers keeps the artifact in the world? No answer was found until the three monks.
The three took the artifact of Atomos, and decided to hide in the world. Nobody knows which of the three monks took the artifact. Each went their own way, never telling the others where they went and never to see each other again. Their fate, has been lost to history.
What is known is that the knowledge of this artifact has been discovered. A race is one, some seek to find it and use it once again to bring down their foes. While others seek to stop them and protect the world from this evil. Which side will you join? Will you seek to find the artifact yourself, use its power for evil or a perceived good? Will you seek to keep it hidden and safe from the world? Perhaps you will seek to find a way to try to destroy the artifact once and for all so the world never has to face this threat again?
