"It is said that when man first stood up and gained consciousness that the Spirits took him by the hand. From the first meeting was born a new creature, neither man nor spirit, but a combination of both. This new life form was given the title Esper." -- An exert from Libri of Ivalice Natio Nationis Written by Seth Tolsky.

While the myth concerning the creation of the first Esper can neither be proved or disproved, it is true that they have been a part of society for as long as anyone can remember. In times past, long before the Larsan Folly, they were said to remain with their mortal kin, traveling as nomads and eventually settling into villages as others did. There can be found no record that the Esper folk would segregate themselves as a whole, though there are those who do prefer to keep their abilities to themselves.

The reason for lack of segregation from other races is because not only of the rarity of the race, given that it is a mating of Spirit and Man (though mating is a very loose term in their creation) which creates an Esper, but also that the traits without fail will fade away in a generation or two. Accordingly it is also quite rare and for every Esper that has awakened and pursued their powers there is another in whom it lies dormant. For all the rarity Esper children do seem to be most common the offspring of Summoners and the devout, though there are always exceptions to the rule.
