Momentum is important, because with it you can leap farther and hit harder than you could otherwise.  With a good head of steam in a run, you can hit somoene with enough force to knock some of their teeth loose and keep going.  If you're fast enough, you can get out of the way before they even realize they've been hit.  Just remember, the moment that you stop, you leave yourself vulnerable.
